Manchester City have joined the race with rivals Chelsea for Atletico Madrid defender Jose Maria Gimenez.
City boss Pep Guardiola is prioritising signing defenders this summer and the Uruguayan has caught he eye. However, he could face a tough battle for Gimenez - who has a release clause of £110million.
Atletico Madrid are not interested in listening to any offers lower than the defender's release fee, with Chelsea also showing an interest, according to ESPN
Man City are looking to add more experience to their backline to partner up with Aymeric Laporte. They recently had a bid accepted from Bournemouth for defender Nathan Ake but Guardiola isn't done there.
Eric Garcia has made positive strides during the second half of the season however Guardiola wants to make another marquee signing at centre-back to take the pressure off the young Spaniard as he continues to learn.
Meanwhile, John Stones has fallen way out of favour at the Etihad while Nicolas Otamendi has failed to cement his place in the starting side.
However, Lampard's plans for Gimenez may be put on hold with Chelsea still unsure whether signing a central defender is a priority for this summer.
The Blues are also hunting for a new goalkeeper, with world-record signing Kepa Arrizabalaga hoping to return to Spain after a turbulent time at Stamford Bridge.
